New Courses – English as a Second Language

Over the Christmas break Unity College gained government approval to offer a new range of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. The college now has a full suite of courses form Certificate 1 (absolute beginner) through to Certificate IV levels. Each course is six months long. The classes will cover reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. Students will also get to be involved in a wide range of Australian life experiences. The college has also gained approval for international students to study these courses.

This outcome has been the culmination of quite a long process and congratulations are in order to Ann Anlezark who will be heading up the English faculty. There are still opportunities for volunteers who would like to assist Ann in supporting these students. Roles could include taking students on visits to various places or even taking some students home for a meal. The aim is to get students out of the classroom as much as possible.

The initial intake will include a group of WEC missionary candidates from Korea and Brazil. These courses will be taught at the WEC centre, 28 Guilfoyle Street, Yarralumla which is where the college used to be located. Initially the course will be offered at the Certificate II and Certificate III levels. The commencement date will be in around two months time once visas have come through for the initial group of international students.
