Northern Territory Mission Trip
Jillian Pryor
A Great time!
Two very different communities in so many ways. One a small, remote community located at the end of a 35k dirt road (1 ½ hours from the nearest major town), the other much larger, located right in the middle of Darwin. One peaceful, clean environment filled with sounds of singing and dancing most nights, the other with sounds of arguing, rubbish and vandalism.
Our time in the Manyallaluk (Eva Valley) Community, located 100k northeast of Katherine, NT, was a great time connecting with, encouraging and being encouraged by the local people. Each night we participated in a time of joyful singing and dancing (they didn’t want to stop), sharing from the Word and prayer – all on the outdoor basketball court. The evenings involved men, women and children celebrating the message of forgiveness through Christ. At the local school we performed songs, puppet shows & a drama, and shared about the countries our team members came from. The children sang songs they have composed about their community for us. We encouraged youth and adults in music and banner making. Fundraising efforts enabled us to donate a sewing machine for banner making and new musical instruments.
In Darwin we revisited the Bagot Community (we have been twice before) where the Victory Indigenous Church offers hope to a community in which many suffer the effects of alcohol and drugs; a community where family breakdown, sickness and premature death are all too common. We ministered at a children’s pool night with puppets and songs and at Sunday services in the open hall, where we were joined by Dan and Sue Armstrong, just returned from revival meetings on Elcho Island.
Face painting and bead making were big hits with the children and helped us to develop relationships with the young people in both communities. As well as sharing what we can these mission trips are always times of learning about what God is doing in these communities, developing cross-cultural understanding and learning how to work together as a team as we aim to share God’s love with the people.
Thank you from the team and the communities to all who supported the mission financially or in prayer. We couldn't have done it without you.
